About Our Retirement Community in Hackettstown, NJ

A History of Service. A Vision for the Future.

In 1884, four Episcopal parishes in Orange, New Jersey, banded together to create a place for seniors in the community to call home. In 1891, a lot adjoining Orange Memorial Hospital was purchased for $4,000, and a building was erected (for $12,000). This was the first “House.” The building was later enlarged, and a chapel was added in 1904. Originally only capable of housing 18 residents, this addition doubled the housing capacity. It was furnished by voluntary gifts and endowments that became the financial structure. As time changed, so did the population of The House. Residents were living longer and requiring more extensive care. To accommodate the changing needs of residents, a search for a new location began. Today’s Hackettstown location was found early in the search but was rejected because it was thought to be too far away and too much of a move for the residents. However, the location had ample land, proximity to shopping and medical facilities, and was pleasantly situated. After reevaluation, the site was enthusiastically purchased. A large building would be built to replace the home in Orange, New Jersey. This would be the foundation of the current “House.” The cornerstone was laid on May 15, 1965.

What began as a rented house with secondhand furnishings is now a thriving 15-acre senior living community that uplifts the lives of Hackettstown, NJ, seniors every day. Many things have changed at The House of the Good Shepherd over the years, but the one constant for more than 125 years is a dedication to service and care.
